Full Product Description

Our coco coir fine grind blend comes with enough Liqui-Dirt plant food concentrate to mix a gallon of plant food. This is a 4-pound coco coir brick in a fine grind texture, which resembles peat moss but has better water retention and aeration properties.

Our fine grind blend is a natural fiber extracted from the coconut husk. It is a versatile growing medium with a fine, soil-like texture. If you want a more coarse blend, our coarse husk blend is for you! “Coco coir husk” refers explicitly to the coarse outer fibers of the husk. The distinction lies in the texture and processing stages, with our fine grind coco coir having a finer texture than our coco coir husk coarse blend.

Coco coir is a natural fiber extracted from the husk of coconuts. It is a versatile and widely used growing medium in gardening and horticulture. The coir fiber is extracted from the mesocarp, the husk’s fibrous outer layer. Due to its excellent water retention, aeration properties, and sustainability, coco coir has become a popular alternative to traditional peat-based growing mediums in gardening and horticulture.

  1. Processing: The process involves soaking, curing, and then grinding or shredding the coconut husk to obtain the fibrous material known as coco coir.
  2. Texture: Our fine-grind coco coir has a fine, soil-like texture, resembling peat moss. It is available in our 4-pound coco coir bricks.
  3. Properties:
    • Water Retention: It has excellent water retention properties, providing a balance between retaining moisture and allowing proper aeration for plant roots.
    • Aeration: The fibrous structure of coco coir promotes air circulation in the root zone, preventing issues such as waterlogging.
    • pH Neutral: It is generally pH neutral, providing a stable base for plant growth. It allows growers to have better control over the nutrient content of the growing medium.
  4. Applications:
    • Potting Mixes: It is commonly used as a component in potting mixes and soilless growing media.
    • Hydroponics: It is favored in hydroponic systems as a substrate for growing plants without soil.
    • Mulching: our coarse hus blend can be used as mulch to improve soil structure and water retention in garden beds.
  5. Sustainability: Coco coir is considered an environmentally friendly option, as it is a byproduct of coconut processing and is renewable.
  6. Reusability: Coco coir can be reused after proper sterilization and treatment, making it a sustainable choice for multiple growing cycles.

  1. Selecting Coco Coir:
    • Purchase high-quality coco coir from reputable suppliers. It’s available in two forms: fine grind texture and coarse husk texture.
  2. Rehydrating Compressed Coco Coir:
    • If you have compressed coco coir bricks or blocks, rehydrate them before use.
  3. Preparing Potting Mix:
    • Mix coco coir with other components to create a well-balanced potting mix. Common additions include perlite, vermiculite, and organic matter. You will receive a free gel pack of Liqui-Dirt plant food to infuse your coco coir when you shop with us.
  4. Hydroponics:
    • In hydroponic systems, coco coir can be used as a growing medium. Place seeds or seedlings directly into the coir or use it with other hydroponic substrates.
  5. Watering:
    • Coco coir has good water retention, but it’s important not to overwater. Water the plants as needed, allowing the coir to stay moist but not waterlogged.
  6. pH Adjustment:
    • Check the pH of the coco coir mix. While it is generally pH neutral, it’s a good practice to monitor and adjust the pH if necessary using pH-adjusting products.
  7. Mulching:
    • Use our coarse husk texture coco coir as mulch around plants to help retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.
